400-word bio:
Born outside of my tribal region and without the native tongue of my ancestors, I have always strived to attain the customary knowledge which is part of my cultural identity. My father was born in Samoa and is bilingual in Samoan and English, but out of concern for his children’s wellbeing chose not to pass on the Fa’a Samoa way to my siblings and I. On the other hand, my mother is monolingual with a basic understanding of her Kāi Tahu heritage and chose a pathway in Māori schooling that would enrich my understanding of tikanga Māori. This focus on education has provided me with a stronger understanding of the Māori worldview and language. My family history and personal experiences inform and ground my practice and are expressed visually in my art.
